Getting Started

To get started draw a 10’’ circle on cardboard and cut it out. This is going to form the base of the nappy cake. If you wish you can cover this in foil or paper.

Next stick together the 4 toilet tubes using the sellotape. This is going to make the tree trunk. This part can be quite tricky so my best tip is to start by taping 2 tubes together. You can add the other tubes as you go along.

Sellotaping 2 of the tubes together. One on top of the other.

Making the tree

Take the raffia and glue the beginning of the raffia to the bottom of the toilet tube to hold it in place.

All 4 tubes sellotaped together and starting to hot glue around the bottom

Then wrap the raffia around the toilet tube holding it tight.

Adding Raffia to the hot glue at the bottom of the toilet tubes.

Keep adding glue at random points to keep it secured.

When I had used one piece of raffia I just glued down the end and also the beginning of the next piece.

Starting to add a fresh piece of raffia by adding hot glue to the tube and continuing to wrap the raffia around.

When the whole toilet tube is covered, pop some glue around the top.

Continue to wrap the raffia tightly to hold the two tubes together.

I carried on with this process until all 4 toilet tubes were covered in raffia and resembled a tree trunk.

Preparing the nappies

Next start to roll the nappies up and wrap the small clear elastic bands around the middle of them. I repeated this 26 times.

Assembling the nappy cake

Next take the cardboard base and start to stand up the nappies on the base. At this point I used a large elastic band to wrap around the nappies to try and hold them in place. I placed all the nappies within the elastic band.

Also you need to slot in the tree trunk you have just made. Place this slightly to the side rather than in the center to allow room for the monkey to sit on the nappies to.

Adding Burlap and ribbon

To hide the elastic band holding it all together, I cut a strip of burlap to wrap around the nappy cake. If you don't have burlap you could use ribbon or material that you have in your craft stash.

Cutting the hessian into a strip

I wrapped the burlap around the centre of the nappies.

Pull the burlap (or the materials you are using) tight around the centre of the nappy cake and secure with glue or hot glue.

Glueing the hessian around the rolled up nappies

I then took some ribbon and secured this around the middle of the nappy cake on top of the burlap. This will also hide the elastic bands. You can use any size or colour ribbon you may have.

Finishing touches

Take the flannel and fold it in half and half again.

The green flannel

Pinch the bottom corner and then pop this into the top of the toilet tubes. Allow the flannel to fall open as this is going to make it look like the top of your tree.

The completed nappy cake. Rolled up nappies on a cardboard base with hessian wrapped around the middle. A toy money is sat on the nappies and a green flannel is slotted inside the raffia covered toilet tubes to look like a palm tree.

Finally sit your toy monkey on top of the nappies and you are all done. Such a lovely cute gift for a new mum or a mum to be.
