How To Make Bunting Using Fat Quarters

I love bunting as you can really get creative and make bunting for any occasion. It is also perfect to make as decor for kids bedrooms, kitchens, camper vans and cute summer houses. You can buy all types of different patterned material that can match the theme you want your bunting to used for. In this blog i am sharing How To Make Bunting Using Fat Quarters. It is really easy to make bunting, and fat quarters are just perfect. They are cheap to buy, you get multiple different pieces of material and they are really easy to sew.

The materials you will need:

Fat Quarters

Cutting Mat

Rotary Cutter

Bias Binding

Sewing Machine

Glass head Pins

Heat Press Mini

Heat Press Mat

Tape Measure

Card

Step 1

First thing you need to do is create a bunting template. I made my bunting triangle template using coloured card. Mine were 9 inches wide and 8 inches high. I found that this size made really good sized bunting.

Placing my bunting template on my material

Place the bunting template on the material. Using the rotary cutter, cut all the pieces of material that you need. Cut 2 pieces of material per bunting triangle.

Step 2

Place the 2 pieces of material right sides together and pin together using the glass head pins. Repeat for all the bunting flags.

Step 3

Next, prepare the bias binding. Take the bias binding and fold it in half. Using an iron or mini heat press press the bias binding so that it stays folded in half. This will be needed for when you sew it to the bunting flags.

Step 4

Using the sewing machine, sew around the 2 sides of the bunting flag. Do not sew along the top of the flags.

The bunting flag sewed along 2 sides of the flag. Leaving the top of the flag unsewn.

Turn the flags the right way round. This should be really easy as the top of the flag has not been sewn. Use something like a material pointer or wooden dowel, make sure the point of the material is fully turned the right way round.

Use the iron or mini heat press to press the flags.

This will make them look really neat and really crisp.

Step 5

Take the bias binding, open it up and place the bunting flags inside. The bias binding should now be over the top of the bunting flags. Use the glass head pins to pin the bias binding and flags together.

If you want to hang the bunting, then at each end of the bias binding make a small loop.

Step 6

Sew across the bias binding to secure the loops. It should look like the picture below.

Sewing along the bias binding. This will secure the loops.

Next sew all the way along the bias binding. This will sew together the bias binding and the flags and finish off the bunting.

Sew all the way along the bias binding to secure the flags and the bias binding together. This has completed and finished off the flags.

You now have super cute bunting that is ready to hang and enjoy.
