How To Make An Initial Felt Flag

I love these felt flags that I see on Pinterest all the time. I was curious how easy they would be to make so I had a go and made one. It was far easier than I could have ever imagined. I loved the results, it turned out better than I thought. I also love the fact that these can be tailored to match any theme or decor. In this blog I am sharing what equipment I used and step by step how to make an initial felt flag.

The material I used to make the felt flag:

Cricut

Standard grip mat

Weeding tool

Brayer

Heat Transfer vinyl

Mini heat press

Heat press mat

Singer promise sewing machine

Purple felt

Purple wool

Material pen

Ruler

Wooden dowel

Step 1 Preparing the felt

I cut out a flag template that was roughly 16cm wide by 20cm long. This is the flag template that I used.

Fold your felt or material in half and draw around the flag template. To make sure that my lines were straight I used a ruler. I also used a fabric pen for drawing around the flag template.

Your material should look like the picture below. Next measure the width of your dowel. Draw a line all the way along the top of the material that will allow the dowel to fit inside.

Step 2 Sewing the flag

Either by hand or by using a sewing machine, sew along the lines you have drawn. Make sure you do not sew right up to the top as you need your dowel to fit in the gap.

Step 3 Preparing the letter

In cricut design space prepare the letter that you wish to use. I used the letter L and changed the font to be Frogurt. You can select any font of your choice for this part.

Measure the front of the banner. I decided that I would make the letter 4" high so not to look too big. If you are using my flag template then 4" makes a nice sized letter for the flag.

Follow the instructions in cricut design space and cut out the letter. As we are using Heat transfer vinyl, do not forget to mirror the letter.

Step 4 Preparing the vinyl

Place the vinyl on the cutting mat. Place it in the top left and corner of the mat. Press down firmly. For this I used a cricut brayer.

When it has been cut, weed away any excess vinyl.

Step 5 Heat pressing the vinyl

Place the vinyl on the front of the flag making sure it is central. Using a heat press or a heat press mini press the vinyl onto the flag.

At this point I also heated all around the edge of the flag, this removed all the pen marks.

Once the vinyl is pressed onto the front of the flag, carefully remove the carrier sheet. If any of the vinyl is not fully adhered to the front of the flag just pop the carrier sheet back over the vinyl and heat press again.

Trim away all the excess felt from around the edge of the flag. I left an 1/2 cm gap all the way around the flag. I think this looks neater and also prevents you from cutting through or too close to your stitches.

Step 6 Finishing off the flag

Place the dowel through the gap you left at the top of your flag.

Using the thread you have selected, add this to either side of your dowel. My dowel had a hole in so I threaded the wool through the hole and then wrapped it around to hide the hole. Make sure you leave a long enough piece of wool to hang your flag.

You will now have a stunning, super cute felt initial flag. I hope you enjoyed the process of making these as much as I did.
