Shop bought pet beds can be so small but so expensive. I challenged myself to make a pet bed that is super soft and luxurious whilst giving my cat, Satsuma plenty of room to move about and sleep. After lots of thought I decided to make my cat bed using a shop bought throw and a pillow for stuffing. Have a look in the sale sections for reduced throws as you can find some really great bargains. In this blog I will share how to sew a pet bed and what supplies you will need.
The supplies I used are:

Step 1 Making the template
Open up the throw and unfold it. The throw I bought was 200cm by 200cm but you would get away with buying a slightly smaller one.
I made some paper templates for my pet bed by sellotaping together A4 sheets of paper. I made a circle with a diameter of 26 inches. My pet bed also had a centre section so I made a template for that which measured 6 inches high and 44 inches long.
Fold the throw in half and then fold each half of the throw in half again. This will give you 4 layers to the throw.

Step 2 Preparing and cutting the throw
Using the template that you have made, fold it in half. Place the folded half against the folded half of the throw. Draw around the template. For this part I used a fabric pen so I would not be left with any unwanted pen lines.

Pin the 2 parts of the throw together so they do not move when you are cutting them out.

Cut along the lines, making sure that you cut both pieces of the throw. When completed this will give you one circle. Repeat the whole process with the other folded side of the throw, this will give you the 2 circles that you need.

Then, fold the centre panel template in half and place along the folded material. Pin the material to hold it in place whilst you draw around the template and cut it out. Cut 2 centre panels.
Step 3 Sewing
Take the 2 centre panels, place them right sides together and then sew down the short side. This will give you one long centre panel now.

Again, placing the material right sides together pin the top and bottom circles to the centre panel ready for sewing.

Make sure that you leave a gap in the centre panels. This will allow you to turn your pet bed the right way around and also be able to add the stuffing.

Once sewn the throw should look like the picture below.

Step 4 Stuffing the pet bed
I bought a polyester filled pillow to use as the stuffing for my pet bed. I found this to be more cost effective than buying the bags of stuffing. One pillow was enough to fill the pet bed.

Step 5 Sewing up the pet bed
Once you have stuffed the pet bed and you are happy with the result. All that is left is to sew up the gap that was left for stuffing the pet bed. I just used a needle and thread and a ladder stitch to close up the gap making your pet bed fully complete.

Now you have your completed pet bed, i'm sure your pets will love it.
